Signature Gathering 101

NEW:  SCAT Signature Gatherers’ Page

WHERE TO GO IN SEATTLE TO GET SIGNATURES  One source is to check out the 2007 Tunnel Vote Map for the darker red areas of Seattle that are likely to support Initiative 101  -  Stop the Tunnel

Seattle City Boundaries  -  Maps

City Boundaries North              City Boundaries South

All signatures are not created equal—we only want to get the signatures of registered Seattle voters, they are the only ones that count towards putting I-101 on the ballot, those are the ones we want, those are the only ones that have value to us!

Strategies for Effective Signature Gathering

City of Seattle Initiative Guide

Washington State Initiatives Do’s and Don’ts

Note:  I-101 is not a statewide initiative but the above document has good practices to keep in mind.

There are several good sources of collecting signatures for petitions:

· Attend meetings where the audience is likely to be receptive to your efforts. Come to the meeting with educational materials, including fact sheets, “what you can do” sheet, signup sheet, and petitions. Set up a display table with your educational materials. Ask ahead of time if you can have a minute to describe your effort and pass around a petition at the meeting, otherwise stand next to your display and talk to people, asking them to sign your petition.

· Consider tabling at local businesses where the clientele is likely to be supportive of your efforts. For example a health food store, grocery store, coop, farmers’ market, or local organic food store are good places to set up a table.

· If the weather is nice, you can set up a table or collect signatures for a petition in front of your post office, local retail shops, coffee shops, or local grocery store.

Checklist for Gathering Signatures

Mail or Drop Off signatures to:

1. Collect only signatures from city of Seattle voters—signatures from voters from another city or town will be disallowed.

2. All signatures must be legible and signed substantially as registered.

3. If the registrars can determine the identity of the voter from the form of the signature then the name shall be considered signed substantially as registered according to the law.

4. The law allows the voter to insert or omit a middle name or initial and still have the signature deemed valid.

5. Voters should sign both their first and last names. For example:  Helen Jones should not sign as "Mrs. John Jones."

6. It is wise to have a list of registered voters or a street listing with you to verify the exact form of registration  -  if you are going door-to-door.

7. We require the voter’s address where he or she is currently registered.

8. If a voter signs incorrectly or makes an error, do not erase or make changes. Leave the incorrect line intact and ask the voter to sign his or her name and address again on the next line. An altered or illegible signature may be disallowed or challenged.

9. Persons who are prevented from signing by physical disability may authorize another individual to sign for them in the voter’s presence.

10. No person may sign for another unless the voter is physically disabled. One spouse may not sign for another.

11. Collect and submit more signatures than the law requires. Many may be disallowed or challenged.

12. Mail, drop-off, or call for pick up (660-8290) often to make sure your signed initiative petitions are in and are in a safe place.  Signatures are worth time and money and they are all that we have to get the I-101 on the ballot.  We need to be able to keep a running total of where we are in our campaign to get signatures.  Without your signed petitions we cannot keep accurate information:
